The Direct Volume Rendering technique reverses the photon paths traveled during the scanning process.
Proposition: Utilization of a non-photorealistic optical model, in which the scalar volume function describes the density of a gaseous self-emitting material.
Hence, the direct volume rendering technique simulates the behaviour of photons traveling through the gas until being perceived by the human eye.
