Optical Effects

DVR Sampling | | Ray Casting

In a gaseous material the following optical effects occur:

  • Emission
  • Absorption
  • Scattering

In a gaseous volume a part of the transmitted light is usually scattered in different directions. The scattered light is scattered further and further until it is finally scattered onto a ray that is being observed by a viewer.

This so called multiple scattering process, is computationally too expensive to be simulated in real-time. Multiple scattering is therefore neglected for volume visualization purposes on only single scattering on viewing rays is taken into account.
